Can you piece together some of the most famous melodies in history? The Beethoven Google Doodle challenges you to reassemble the composer’s scattered sheet music in a charming puzzle game that’s equal parts frustrating and delightful. Released on December 17, 2015, this interactive Doodle celebrates the 245th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s baptism — his actual birth date remains unknown.

The premise is simple: poor Beethoven is rushing to his big concert when disaster strikes. His sheet music gets jumbled up (at one point, a horse literally eats some of it), and you need to arrange the pieces in the correct order so he can perform. It’s a fitting tribute to a man whose life was full of setbacks. Beethoven was pulled out of school at age 10 by his alcoholic father who wanted to exploit his musical talents. He lost siblings prematurely, had to support his entire family as a teenager, suffered through unrequited love affairs, and most famously, began losing his hearing at the peak of his career.

By around 1798, Beethoven noticed ringing and buzzing in his ears. The deafness progressed steadily — by 1814 he was completely deaf. Yet he kept composing. He’d pound on pianos so hard the strings would jangle, trying to feel the vibrations. His Ninth Symphony, featuring the iconic “Ode to Joy,” was written when he couldn’t hear a single note. At its premiere in 1824, Beethoven had to be turned around to see the audience’s thunderous applause because he couldn’t hear it.

The Doodle features four levels, each using one of his most recognizable compositions: Symphony No. 5 (that famous “da-da-da-DUM”), Für Elise, Moonlight Sonata, and Ode to Joy. Even if you’ve never read sheet music, you’ll probably recognize these melodies instantly — they’ve appeared in countless movies, commercials, and ringtones for over two centuries. Each puzzle piece has a speaker icon so you can preview how it sounds before placing it. The difficulty increases as you progress, with more pieces to arrange in later levels.
