Remember Space Invaders? Now imagine those alien invaders are chickens. Angry, revenge-seeking, egg-throwing chickens from outer space. That’s Chicken Invaders in a nutshell — a hilarious shoot ’em up that’s been making gamers laugh (and frantically dodge eggs) since 1999.
The premise is gloriously absurd. Extraterrestrial chickens have invaded Earth seeking revenge for humanity’s centuries of oppression against their earthly brethren. Your mission? Pilot a lone spacecraft and blast every last feathered invader out of the sky before they subjugate the planet. It’s essentially saving the world so we can keep eating omelettes.
Created by Greek indie developer Konstantinos Prouskas and his studio InterAction Studios, Chicken Invaders started as a parody of the 1978 arcade classic. But what began as a simple joke became one of the longest-running video game franchises developed in Greece, spawning five main sequels and countless holiday editions over more than 25 years.
The gameplay loop is beautifully addictive. Waves of chickens descend in various formations, dropping eggs as projectiles you’ll need to dodge. Blast them and they drop drumsticks — collect enough of these and you earn a screen-clearing missile for when things get too chaotic. Gift box power-ups let you upgrade your weapons through eight power levels, turning your basic peashooter into a devastating chicken-annihilating machine.
Each level consists of 10 waves culminating in a boss fight. And these boss chickens mean business — they’re bigger, tougher, and significantly angrier than their minions. Beat them and you warp to a new system where everything moves faster and hits harder. The game technically never ends; it just keeps getting more difficult until you finally run out of lives.
The sequels took the absurdity even further. “The Next Wave” had you clearing the entire Solar System. “Revenge of the Yolk” (yes, a Star Wars parody) introduced 4-player co-op. “Ultimate Omelette” featured a planet-sized egg cannon threatening to coat Earth in deadly omelette. And “Cluck of the Dark Side” — well, you can probably guess that reference.
